Description

Captain Henry Mowat was commanded to bombard ports, shipping and towns along the coast of Massachusetts including the coast of Maine which was then part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, during the American Revolution.

This communication to Admiral Samuel Graves describes Captain Mowat's mission, including the bombardment of Falmouth (now Portland).

Graves was in charge of the British navy in North America and ordered the burning of Falmouth in October 1775.
