William Haley, Jr. letter to his wife, Miriam, 1865

Contributed by Sebago Historical Society

Description

William Haley wrote to his wife in Sebago from a military camp near Washington, DC. Haley mentions that he is in a field watching his horses graze and that he has heard that Booth has been caught. “I hope that it is so I should like to see that villing strung up.”

He hopes to get paid on Saturday and to send Miriam some money, “I expect you have snug work to get along for money.”

He speculates about the end of the war and asks what the copperheads say about the murder of Lincoln.
