Description
“The Lubec Trust and Banking Company was chartered in 1907 as a creation of the sardine entrepreneurs to assist their businesses,” according to Edward Lee Marmon’s book “Taking Care of Business Down East: The History of the Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Company 1887-1987,” page 45. “It was never able to fully meet its customers’ financial needs...The Lubec Bank was familiar with Bar Harbor through mutual directors, common shareholders, and local investments. Seldom in robust health, the Depression sent the Lubec Bank into a nosedive in 1930, from which it never recovered...the Lubec sardine bankers were anxious for a White Knight. Most were eager to annoint the familiar Bar Harbor Bank for this purpose...the ebbing fortunes of the Lubec Bank and close business ties with the region persuaded bank officers that the Lubec Bank was a good candidate for acquisition.” Bar Harbor took it over July 1, 1936, moving in the early 1980s to a new building at 74 Washington Street.
