Water Street, Lubec, 1975, 1975

Description

Buildings along Water Street in Lubec in 1975.

Hidden in the deep shadow of an autumn morning is Unobsky’s Lobster Trap Gift Shop, its red-and-white-striped “lighthouse” ice cream and popcorn stand faintly visible. The adjacent vacant store front, once the Calkins Shoe Shop, will soon become Lubec Hardware, still functioning at this site as of 2012.

The next business is the Mabee Drug Store with a Rexall franchise sign in its window, in 2012 the Wags & Wool business. The next two store fronts housed Unobsky’s Department store, with an oddly curved vertical sign projecting from the second story. In 2012 these shops housed the Laughing Raven Gift Shop and Bayside Chocolates. The corner building (demolished in April 2011) with Coca-Cola sign was restaurant owner George O’s. In 1975 these buildings still sported remnants of the late 19th Century false front era, since modernized with new facades.
