Description
William Haley, Jr. writes to his daughter, Elzira, that his regiment and “the 26 Mass & the 12 Conn are doeing all the patroll & guard duty in the city of Savannah Ga.” He has heard that the 29th Maine is mustered out and expects his regiment will be next, but goes on to say he thinks they might be kept until the elections in October.
He continues writing the next day after having spent all morning with Reuben “hauling cannon in from the breast works and shall have to go out again at four oclock for another load.”
He finishes his letter the following day stating that he is well, and has gotten up before sunrise as “Reubin & I are on patroll today.”
He has heard that the state aid has stopped and wonders if it is true. He wants her to tell her sister Sarah that “after Par gets home she shall have a present for going to school so steady.”
