Description
The Christian Association was the oldest and longest running organization in the Farmington Normal School's history. Records from the University of Maine, Farmington, archives show that the group was organized at least as far back as 1886.
Upon enrollment at the Normal School, Christian students were automatically made members of the Christian Association. But becoming an "active" member who participated in Association functions was a matter of choice.
In 1914, the Christian Assoc held an annual fair, which included booths with handiwork, school banners, pillows, aprons and candy as well as some afternoon entertainment. The group also regularly had a reading table with “nearly all the best magazines,” bought and kept filled the school’s medicine chests, and held its time honored Every Thursday prayer meetings for many years.
The Christian Assoc also had weekly chocolate sales and the funds earned were set aside for a permanent benevolent fund. During the First World War and World War II, the group was very active in raising money for the Red Cross and other war relief efforts.
During the 1920s, Christian Assoc. sophomores wrote letters to the incoming first year students and when possible met the new students at the train station as a way to welcome them to FSNS.
By 1942, the Christian Assoc takes over the campus’ chapel services and had complete charge of chapel exercises and programs. It also continued its vesper services.
In 1967, the Christian Association was replaced with a new Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship.
