Description

The Oakland Sidney United Methodist Church was built on School Street in the 1870s. The Methodists in Oakland had previously used the vestry of the old Free Will Baptist Church. The church, constructed at a cost of $6,000, remained largely empty for its first few years, but membership began to grow in 1876.

A school building was built next to the church in 1898 as a high school but was almost completely destroyed in a fire on September 14, 1900. The high school building was replaced in 1901. When the new Williams High School opened in 1925, the School Street building went on to host younger grades and was eventually sold in 1945.

The caption reads, "High school and Methodist Church, Oakland, Me."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
