Description

The stretch shown in this postcard as Ogunquit’s business district covers Main Street between Berwick Road and Shore Road. In the late 1930s, this section of the block included an A&P Market, Tower’s Drug Store (Elmer Tower’s store that replaced the Ogunquit Pharmacy), and the First National Store, which later became the Village Food Market. The Ogunquit Playhouse was opened in a renovated Old Elm Garage on the Perkins Block in the village square in 1933 before moving to its permanent location in 1937. Though it has evolved over the years, Ogunquit’s Main Street (along Route 1) through the square has been central to the shopping, business, entertainment, and tourism industry of the town. It was serviced by an electric trolley in the early part of the 20th century.

The caption reads, "Business Section, Ogunquit, Maine."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
