Description

This plaque on Ogunquit's Marginal Way honors conservationist and former Civil War officer Josiah Chase, Jr. (1840-1928), who bought the 20-acre strip of land that became the Marginal Way and donated it to the town of Ogunquit in 1925.

The Marginal Way is a path in Ogunquit, Maine that traces from Perkins Cove to Ogunquit Village. Chase was the first of many philanthropists to support the Marginal Way, which has since been expanded an additional ¼ mile with donations from Ogunquit landowners. Chase’s childhood friend F. Raymond Brewster, who had persuaded Chase to preserve public access along the shoreline, petitioned to the town to have a plaque installed at the entrance to the Marginal Way, and it was erected and dedicated in 1947.

The caption reads, "Plaque on the Marginal Way, Ogunquit, Maine."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
