Description
Named by the shape of the lot where Main and School Streets meet near the top of the hill, this large house apparently functioned as both a tourist facility and a boarding house at various times. According to their daughter Dorothy (1919-2008), John and Myrtle (Morang) Blanch bought the house from Alvin Ramsdell in 1936. John Blanch (1883-1941), was a bookkeper for the American Can Company and active in community life including the Grange and the Masons. Writing in the book “200 Years of Lubec History 1776-1976,” Dorothy states that Myrtle was still operating the tourist home in 1975 at the age of 90.
This photograph bears a processing date of June 1980 in the lower left corner, suggesting that it was taken during the 1979-80 winter. This view is from School Street, which joins Main immediately left of the image. The house was gone before 1998, the lot still partially vacant as of 2012.
