Description
Maine Governor Israel Washburn wrote to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to urge him to appoint Col. George F. Shepley, a lawyer from Portland, as Brigadier General of Volunteers.
Shepley had been commander of the 12th Maine Regiment and was serving as Brigadier General of the 3rd Brigade in the Department of the Gulf.
Washburn wrote that Shepley left "perhaps the largest & most lucrative practice of any lawyer in the State to aid in putting down the Rebellion." He described him as "one of the ablest men in Maine & possessing great executive ability."
The letter, which Shepley saved among his papers, is a copy of the original letter to Stanton.
