Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

2nd Lt. Horatio Height of Co. C of the 12th Maine Regiment Volunteers, wrote to Capt. Charles C. G. Thornton, commander of the ports in New Orleans, to report on items he seized from the office of the Bayou Company.

Height removed Confederate and Union flags and a rifle, but also reported that the schooner Florida of Mobile had been acting as a privateer "in the service of the so called 'Confederate States.'" He seized the vessel and wrote that he intended to arrest the Bayou Co. agent, unless ordered not to do so.

Height, of Scarborough, enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant in November 1861 at age 27.
