Description
Zerah Getchell, who had moved from Bath to New Orleans before the Civil War, wrote to Col. George F. Shepley, military commandant of New Orleans and a Maine native, declaring himself a Unionist and offering his services to the occupying Union army. Shepley had made a plea for Unionists in the city to offer their services.
He wrote that he had been "abused and persecuted by the Secessionists of the place."
Getchell offered to "furnish testimonials in regard to my character for sobriety & honesty."
He also noted that he was the son-in-law of "Mr. Laster," a Union candidate for recorder of the Fourth District, an area of New Orleans.
