Description
Saco and Biddeford are separated by the Saco River and connected by multiple bridges, such as the Main Street Bridge shown here.
A sign for Biddeford’s Pepperell Mill can be seen on the left hand side of the river in this image. The Pepperell Mill was one of the most prominent mills in the town, manufacturing textiles and doing increasingly amounts of international business. In 1844, textile investor Samuel Batchelder bought the site of a former cotton mill along the Saco River and began the Pepperell Manufacturing Company, building a second mill for textiles along the waterfront. The mill produced linens, blankets, and towels.
The caption reads, "Biddeford and Saco Bridge, Biddeford, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
