Description
The Swinging Bridge in Skowhegan serves as a narrow suspension bridge connecting Skowhegan Island to Alder Street on the south side of the Kennebec River. The first bridge at the site was built in 1883 as a pedestrian bridge for a local farmer trying to get to the mainland. The bridge collapsed in 1886 after the cables rotted and was replaced by two bridges that were subsequently washed out in floods in 1901 and 1936. The fourth bridge constructed on the site in 1936 survived into the 21st century and was renovated in 2006. It is a wire cable suspension bridge open only to bicyclists and pedestrians.
