Description

Bear Pond is a 250-acre oligotrophic body of water surrounded by virgin conifers, Flag Rock on Bear Mountain, Hawk Mountain, and Mount Tir’em. It is home to more than fifteen varieties of both coldwater and warmwater fish and has thus served as a popular year-round fishing spot. With a maximum depth of 72 feet, the pond is Waterford’s deepest lake. Two stories have spread as to the possible origins of the pond’s name. One tale relates that Bear Pond was named for a bear that was killed in Waterford during early settlement of the area. Another story holds that a mother bear fell through the ice in spring of the late 1770s, while her cub survived, and the pond was named to honor her spirit after recovery of her body.

The caption reads, "Bear Pond, South Waterford, Maine."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
