Description

The Walker Homestead was located at the corner of Main and Elm Streets in Topsham, Maine. The mansion house was built by Major Nathaniel Walker from 1808-1809. Walker, originally from Arundel, served in the War of 1812 and later as town clerk and postmaster in Topsham. Walker married Jane Thompson in 1810, and the couple both lived in and operated an inn at the homestead until their deaths in 1851. Nathaniel and Jane had five children while living at the house, the youngest of whom, their son Oliver A. Walker, died at the house in 1826 when he was 15 years old. Their son Wildes P. Walker took over the business after his parents’ death and had a catalogue of the paintings, engravings, and photographers held at the Walker Homestead printed in 1864.

The building was later converted into a hotel.

The caption reads, "Walker's Homestead, Topsham, Maine."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
