Description
The Dana Warp Mill was located on Bridge Street in Westbrook. In 1866, Woodbury Kidder Dana and Thomas McEwan opened the Dana & McEwan Company at Saccarappa Falls to manufacture cotton warps. After buying McEwan’s shares and changing the name to Dana Mills, Dana moved the mill first to Main Street and then to its final location on the banks of the Presumpscot River, as pictured in this postcard.
The mill at Bridge Street was a two-story wooden building that was later replaced by a larger brick structure. Dana was known for both the quality of his products and the treatment of his employees. The cotton mill thrived under his management, growing to 56,000 spindles and more than 600 employees. Eventually succumbing to a combination of labor costs, an increase in government regulations, and greater use of synthetic fabrics, the Dana Warp Mill closed in 1957.
The caption reads, "Dana Warp Mill at night, Westbrook, Maine."
The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
