Description
George Scott of Wiscasset was 42 when he enlisted as a captain in Co. C of the 14th Maine Infantry on Dec. 30, 1861.
In June 1862, while the regiment was in New Orleans, he wrote to Col. Franklin Nickerson, commander of the 14th Maine, seeking to resign from the regiment due to disease and because an "officer of inferior rank" was promoted over him, which he saw as "a charge of disability, or incompetency."
While his resignation initially was rejected, it was accepted on December 25, 1862.
