Description
Gen. George F. Shepley, serving as military governor of Louisiana, was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers by President Abraham Lincoln on July 25, 1862.
Shepley, a Portland lawyer and later judge, joined the 12th Maine Regiment as colonel in November 1861. When the regiment reached the Gulf of Mexico in early 1862, he was named commander of the 3rd Brigade. When Union troops captured New Orleans, he became military commandant of the city, and later became military governor of Louisiana.
