Description
According to the book, “200 Years of Lubec History,” p. 100, this house on Pleasant Street was built by C. J. Staples. William W. Baker (1859-1947) came to Lubec and began working for the Sam’l Staples & Son, a prosperous shipping firm owning numerous vessels, later buying into the business. According to the narrative in the Lubec History book written by William Baker II, following the deaths of Sam Staples and his son John the widow left her interest to the senior Baker. By this time the firm primarily retailed lumber, hardware and groceries from the Staples Store on upper Water Street. The structures to the right lie on the opposite (water) side of Pleasant Street. The long-vacant house still stands as of 2012.
