Description
Hubert E. Saunders, Washington County Public Administrator in the 1940s and Don H. and Ella Louise Blanch Saunders lived at this house on the water side of Pleasant at the corner with School Street. He was a lawyer, and son of Judge Hubert Elijah Saunders. Ella, sister to Dorothy Blanch (a professional actress who later returned to practice theatre in Lubec), taught Home Economics at Lubec High School.
The house was razed in the later 20th Century. The gray building behind, which remains in use as of 2012, functioned as a telephone facility through the 1950s when crank telephones and live operators served Lubec. The superintendent of schools had an office upstairs at the same time. For one period the Town Office was downstairs after the phone company left.
