Annie Thornton to Gen. George F. Shepley, Scarborough, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Annie C. Thornton, the wife of Capt. Charles C.G. Thornton of the 12th Maine Infantry, wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, who was serving as military governor of Louisiana, to thank him for his "great kindness to Chas. and still greater to me."

Charles Thornton had been wounded and taken prisoner at Ponchatoula on Sept. 15 and Shepley, a Portland lawyer who enlisted in the 12th Maine as a colonel in 1861, apparently arranged to have Thornton paroled and returned to Maine to recover.
