Description
Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley wrote to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton seeking permission to hire James C. Shepley, a cousin, as his military secretary.
Shepley, a Maine native and U.S. Attorney for the district of Maine before the war, sought a commission as a captain for James Shepley, a Maine native and Minnesota lawyer, and noted that he only two other assistants on his staff.
James Shepley had been on the job since Dec. 12.
