Description
A round, white porcelain dish that was made in England was used for commemorative purposes by the Odd Fellows Hall of South Norridgewock.
The dish has scalloped sides with gold trim. The bottom shows a large willow tree and the old Congregational Church.
Settlers donated their labor, lumber and rocks for the foundation of the church and records show that rum and molasses were purchased for the occasion.
At first, the structure served several denominations - the Congregationalists, Methodists, and Baptist groups. After numerous renovations, two-thirds of the first floor served as a town hall and one-third as a vestry.
By 1836 the large sanctuary was completed on the second floor and in 1840, two wide staircases led up to the main auditorium which would seat some seven hundred people.
In 1945 the first floor of this church was used for classrooms when the consolidated school burned. Two years later, in 1947, the church burned as well.
