Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana and former commander of the 12th Maine Regiment, wrote to Gen. Godfrey Weitzel, commander of the reserve brigade, to warn him that ordnance stores that General Nathaniel Banks, head of the Department of the Gulf, wanted Union forces to retrieve were on the Mississippi -- and that Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson was in the area, ready to attack if Banks moved to Port Hudson.
