Description
Sumner Wood Jr. of Auburn wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana and former commander of the 12th Maine Regiment, asking why his brother, Sgt. William D. Wood of the 1st Maine Battery, had not been promoted.
Sumner Wood cited the case of a private who was promoted to lieutenant, while Sgt. Wood was not promoted.
Wood wrote, "I do not write wishing to be understood that I attach any blame to you ..."
Records indicate Sgt. William Wood mustered out of the 1st Maine Battery April 8, 1863.
