Description

Reuben and Christiana Blanchard, and Frank and Elizabeth Blanchard with sons Harry and Fred in front of their house on Greely Road in Cumberland, around 1880.

Captain Reuben Blanchard, son of Beza and Prudence Blanchard, was born on August 24, 1794, in the town of Cumberland. He was the eldest of twelve children. Blanchard first left home and went to sea as a common sailor when he was eighteen years old. He was shipwrecked in the first vessel he commanded, The Union, and of the eleven on board, all were lost but himself and the mate.

Soon after this, Blanchard retired and married Christiana, daughter of Solomon Loring of North Yarmouth. He and Christiana had four children together: Enos O., Horatio S., Frederick P., and Francis W.

According to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission Historic Building Survey of 2000, the documented date of construction of the house pictured is 1800.
