Description
On February 6, 1851, the Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Cumberland and John N. Emery of Biddeford signed an indenture which bound "an infant Child of the widow of Cyrus Blanchard late of Cumberland aforesaid deceased," over to John N. Emery.
The said child, whose name later became Mary Ellen Emery, was to stay with Mr. Emery until she arrived at the age of eighteen years, and was to be provided with "good & suitable food & clothing and nessesaries [sic] both in sickness and in health during the said term." John N. Emery was also to "teach said Child to read, write, & cypher or cause the same to be taught."
