Description
On June 3, 1822, the Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Cumberland, David Prince, William Buxton and Beza Blanchard, signed an indenture that bound Charles Lowell, son of Jeremiah Lowell of Cumberland, into an apprenticeship with Bangs Doane of Bucksport, in the County of Hancock.
Lowell was to "be instructed and employed in the art Trade or Mystery of Farming." He was ordered to "Live and Serve The Said Bangs Doane as an apprentice from the Day of the Date hereof untill December Twenty Fifth in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Eight at which time the Sd Charles Lowell comes to the age of twenty One years." Mr. Doane was to "promise and agree To instruct and employ his Said Apprentice Or otherwise cause him to be instructed and Employed in the Said art, trade, or Mystery Of Farming," and also to "teach and instruct the Said apprentice, or cause him to be taught And instructed, to Read and write, and Cypher."
