Description
Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana, wrote to Brig. Gen. Daniel Ullman endorsing a recommendation that Capt. Alfred E. Buck, Co. C of the 13th Maine Regiment, be appointed a colonel in one of the regiments of the Corps D'Afrique, black troops.
Buck already had been recommended by the lieutenant colonel of his regiment and by Brig. Gens. Sherman and Dow. Shepley also referred Ullman to officials in Maine as references.
Buck received a commission as lieutenant colonel of the 51st U.S. Colored Infantry in October 1864. He was a native of Foxcroft and graduate of Colby College.
The letter is Shepley's draft, with a note on it that it should be copied. The "clean" copy was to be sent to Ullman.
