Description
Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, who was serving as military governor of Louisiana, wrote to Gen. Lorenzo Thomas, adjutant general of the U.S. Army, accepting a commission as brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers.
Shepley noted that the General Order giving him the commission failed to note that when he became a brigadier general, he was colonel of the 12th Regiment Maine Volunteers.
Shepley was a Portland lawyer and judge.
The letter is a copy of the one he sent Thomas.
