Description
The Alida Leese Home, formerly a residence hall for the MGH/MMC Schools of Nursing, housed the Portland campus of Maine's School of Practical Nursing, operated by the Maine Department of Education. The other two campuses were located in Waterville and Presque Isle. The building was located at the rear of the original Maine General Hospital building. The first floor was renovated for use by the school and the quarters provided classrooms, offices, a library, and a lounge.
The first class of 20 students was accepted for the January 1963 session. Frances V. O'Brien, former Assistant Director of Nursing Schools at Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center, was principal of the new school. Other staff were a nursing instructor, a part time nutritionist, and two clinical instructors.
