Description
The Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions, wrote to Mary A. Calderwood, identified as the "former widow" of Eben S. Calderwood of Co. H, 21st Maine Regiment, concerning her request for her widow's pension.
The letter instructed her in how to fill out the application to ensure she received the pension.
Eben Calderwood, who enlisted at age 40 in November 1862, died in Baton Rouge on May 27, 1863. Mary Calderwood apparently remarried after the war; she had been approved for a state pension in 1867 for support of her children.
