Letter concerning 'ill' soldier, Portland, 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Nancy P. Hall and her daughter Amanda C. Ricker of Portland wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana to get information about Frank Ricker, their son and brother, respectively, who was serving in Battery F. of the 1st U.S. Artillery.

Shepley, a Maine native, was a lawyer in Portland before the war.

They wrote that Nancy Hall's husband, James Hall, a civil engineer, was away, or he would have sent the inquiry. They noted that he had been in the service nearly three years and sick in different hospitals much of that time. He reportedly was awaiting Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks signature for discharge from the army.

Capt. James .F. Miller, also from Maine and on Shepley's staff, wrote on the letter that Mrs. Hall told him she suspected Ricker was "living with another woman at New Orleans." Another note on the letter reads: "Has not been sick in Hospital, but employed as Hospital nurse." it is signed "F"
