Description
Senator Edmund Muskie is pictured here having lunch with two unidentified people.
Muskie served as Governor of Maine from 1955-1959 and as a member of the U S Senate from 1959-1980. He also served as Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and 1981. Muskie was also a candidate for the Democratic nomination to run for President in 1972. His family was of Polish descent and he held the highest office ever by a Polish-American, Secretary of State.
Muskie was one of the many dignitaries to come to Sugarloaf to watch the World Cup Ski Races. He was born in Rumford in 1914 and passed away in 1996. The Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine was named in his honor.
