Description
The Swiss Ski Team was housed at Judson's Sugarloaf Motel which was owned and run by Irv and Edna Judson. Pictured here are three Swiss Alpine team members. From left to right they are Edmund Bruggman, from Flums, Peter Frei, from Davos, and Bernhard Russi, from Andermatt.
Bruggman came in second place in the Giant Slalom on a pair of skis borrowed from Gustavo Thoeni. The Swiss Ski Team's wax trailer caught on fire and destroyed most of their ski equipment.
Of the three, Bernhard Russi had the most spectacular racing career, winning the 1970 World Championship Downhill and a Gold medal in Downhill at the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo Japan, plus many individual World Cup wins. Russi later went on to be a pre-eminent Downhill race course designer. One of his most famous is the "Birds of Prey" course in Beaver Creek Colorado. Bernhard was also the winner of the 1971 American Arlberg Kandahar Downhill Race at Sugarloaf.
