Description
As part of the "Tall Timber Classic" theme for the Sugarloaf World Cup races, flags were attached to the top of poles cut from large Maine trees. These three Maine Arborists and Woodsmen climbed the tall poles each morning and evening to put up and take down the three flags for the event.
The American flag was on the center pole and was affixed by Bernard "Barnie" Thompson of Brewer Maine. As of 2012, Barnie, though in his eighties, still skis at Sugarloaf. The other pole climbers were Daniel Harkins from Greene, Maine and Wesley McKagne from Westbrook, Maine. The three flags hoisted were the American, Maine and FIS flags. The FIS, Federation International du Ski, is the governing body of the World Cup ski races.
The poles were located in front of the Sugarloaf Base Lodge. After the event the poles were left in place for many years to serve as bearers for the American, Maine and Canadian flags.
