Contributed by Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Club through Ski Museum of Maine
Description
This image shows the lower third of the 1971 World Cup Giant Slalom course at Sugarloaf. The finish line is in the lower right.
The knoll near the top of this photograph was call Kangaroo Hill because both racers and recreational skiers alike could find themselves with air under their skis if they were not paying attention.
It is also of note that the marker flags, denoting the course, are on bamboo poles in this photograph. While that was common at the time they were soon superseded by plastic poles, which have hinges in them to help prevent breakage and improve safety.
