Contributed by Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Club through Ski Museum of Maine
Description
Gustavo Thoeni, center, the first place finisher in the 1971 World Cup at Sugarloaf, is flanked by second place racer Edmund Bruggman of Switzerland on the right and third place finisher Henri Duvillard of France on the left.
As part of the Tall Timber theme for the World Cup races, the top three of each event were given silver plated axes as their trophies. The axes were made by Snow and Neally a Maine woods and farm implement manufacturer from Bangor.
Edmund Bruggman was racing on skis borrowed from Gustavo Thoeni since his were lost in the Swiss wax trailer fire.
