Description
Brig. Gen. Neal Dow of Portland, who enlisted at age 57 in the 13th Maine Infantry, served in Louisiana where he was injured in May 1863. While convalescing, he was captured by Confederate forces and sent to a prison in Richmond.
Dow wrote from the prison, asking Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana and a friend from Portland, to send him some of his belongings.
Dow discusses the state of the war, reporting, "The Rebellion is at the last gasp."
