Description
Vaughan's Bridge connects Portland to South Portland. The photograph shows the bridge built in 1908 and the surrounding harbor.
The old bridge in South Portland was north on Main Street/Route 1 toward Portland; Main Street flowed onto Vaughan’s Bridge. The bridge went over the Fore River to Bramhall’s Point on the Portland side.
This iron bridge was the second Vaughan's Bridge. The first was a wooden toll bridge built in 1800 that was turned over to the county in 1854.
Prior to Vaughan’s Bridge, travelers coming from the south went to Westbrook Street and into Portland via the bridge at Stroudwater. That route no long existed after the airport was built.
Before the airport was built Vaughan's bridge reduced travel time from points south to Portland that it became so popular that it required replacing by 1907.
The second Vaughan's bridge was demolished in 1954. As of 2012 signs of the old bridge could still be found in South Portland. The remains consisted of some old iron railings that were left standing where the bridge took off from the South Portland side.
