Description
A postcard shows one of Maine's leading mercantile establishments, Eastman Bros. & Bancroft. It was located on the corner of Brown and Congress Street and was established in 1865.
Eastman Brothers & Bancroft was a department store specializing in dry and fancy goods, ladies cloaks and suits, and was located at 492 Congress Street. It was established and owned by Briceno M. Eastman (1831-1921), Ermon D. Eastman and Fred E. Eastman (1865-1948).
Eastman Brothers & Bancroft was forced to close during the Great Depression and sold their building to Filene's Department Stores, which opened in 1937.
