Description
Fred N. Dow, the son of Brig. Gen. Neal Dow (1804-1897) of the 13th Maine Regiment, wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana, asking him to send the senior Dow's baggage to Portland.
Neal Dow, who was wounded at the Battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana, in May 1863, was taken prisoner while recuperating from his wounds. He was at Libby Prison until March 1864. Dow was 57 when he enlisted.
