Description
The Topsham hand pumper, the Androscoggin #2--or "Andy"--is being pumped by her crew, members of the Androscoggin Fire Company, at a competitive fire muster in Westbrook on July 4, 1923. Andy won numerous fire muster competitions in state and around the New England region.
The foreman standing on top with his arms outstretched oversees the crew and yells out the cadence to pump. The man next to him is in charge of watching the wind. The remaining crew members pump the water on the foreman's command.
