Description
Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, a native of Maine who was former military governor of Louisiana, received a telegram on May 6, 1864 from Daniel W. Gooch, chairman of the Committee on Conduct of the War of the U.S. House of Representatives, about an accusation against Shepley.
The telegram noted that "Testimony before Committee on Conduct of War says you passed Fort Pillow with troops while attacked without offering assistance any statement you may forward immediately will be made a part of the testimony."
Gooch (1820-1891) was a representative from Massachusetts.
