Description
The Madawaska Training School campus buildings, circa 1950, pictured from left are the Model School, Nowland Hall, and Cyr Hall.
The Madawaska Training School, present day University of Maine at Fort Kent, was founded in 1878. The Model School building was built in 1909 and is the only pictured building that still exists on campus today. As of 2012 it housed classrooms and campus offices.
Nowland Hall was built in 1891 and served as the women' dormitory. In 1955, Nowland Hall burned down as the result of an electrical fire. The current Nowland Hall is a dining hall on campus and a completely separate building.
The Cyr Hall building depicted in this photograph was its third incarnation. The first Cyr Hall was built in 1889, it was replaced the first time in 1894, and then again with this building in 1932. The building depicted here contained classrooms and the library. This building was demolished in 1959 and was replaced with a fourth Cyr Hall, that as of 2012 is still in operation.
