Description
On July 4, 1986, New York Harbor was filled with vessels of all kinds in a parade of sail to honor the centennial and recent restoration of the Statue of Liberty. The schooner Bowdoin, herself newly restored, appears under sail, framed by the crowd of spectators on shore.
Launched in East Boothbay in 1921, the Bowdoin shows the classic lines of the American "knockabout" fishing schooner of the late 19th century. Her low rig, rounded bow and compact shape were designed for Arctic conditions where the vessel would typically encounter either too much or too little wind.
