Description
As the 1868 presidential election approached, George F. Shepley, a Portland lawyer, received dozens of invitations to speak to Republican groups on issues of the day and to support Republican candidate Ulysses S. Grant in the election.
M. Lane wrote to Shepley on August 20 inviting him and Sen. William Fessenden to speak in Standish on the Saturday before election day.
