Description
George L. Beal of Norway wrote to George F. Shepley of Portland to report on a meeting with President Ulysses S. Grant about political appointments in Maine.
Beal, commander of the 29th Maine Regiment and commander of the eastern district of South Carolina during Reconstruction, sought appointment as surveyor of Portland or Pension Agent. He asked Grant to remove the person who held the post, something that Grant reportedly promised to look into.
Beal wrote that if he got the job, he wanted the newspapers to "speak of it as coming from an administration who do recognize those who fought for their country and are willing some of there patronage should go to those men.
Shepley was a brigadier general and military governor of Louisiana, among other posts during the Civil War. He and Beal both served in the Department of the Gulf.
Beal also had written to Shepley earlier in 1869 about the issue of patronage appointments.
